linux world is reporting that the National Weather Service has just bought a total of 1060 IBM Linux Boxen: 160 servers and 900 Workstations.

The IBM spokesman added that the data-intensive applications run by the NWS will henceforth run four times faster:

“Refresh times have been cut from 247 seconds to 62 seconds, speeding up data delivery and analysis. When you’re dealing with weather, any improvement helps. It’s about saving lives and saving property, and that’s what the NWS is in business to do.” </p>
