Moving to Windows 2008 server as workstation: Part 3: 6 weeks on
Ok, so, this post has been delayed for quite some time. in part 1 of this series, i talked about Media. And in part 2, i talked about Photography. these where both looking forward, at what could go wrong. Well, part 3 is now looking back. The upgrade of the Mac PRo to run Win2k8Srv happened about 6 weeks ago, and so far, so good. some notes below.
- Some things i want to play with (Channel 4 On Demand, Sky Player) wont work, but thats not because of Windows Server. thats because they dont play nice with 64 bit machines. This sucks! When will Channel 4 or Sky get proper developers in and fix the problem?
- Hyper-V rocks, but as a solution to the above problem, well, its not. Hyper-V does not have a sound card, so, no sound... In reality, makes sense. how many times have you installed a sound card in a server?
- the speed of this thing rocks! everything seems faster, responds quicker, and runs more stable. ok, i have had no crashes with Vista, but i have a sense that its more stable... probably just me...
- The iPhone, iPod touch and iPod classic all sync well with iTunes. no problems there. it even talks with my Apple TV without issue!
- I havent used the big DSLR camera in a while, but my small point and shoot one works perfect. plug in, download and see everything recorded! very nice.
- Back to Hyper-V and speed. I currently have 3 VMs running under Hyper-V: Win2k8 Enterprice, Win2k8 Web and a Virtual Cacti install. Everything still responds quickly, and the only slow down i have is if all 3 VHDs and the host need something of the HDD. Since all are sitting on one single spindle... This is my problem, and adding more drives should solve it...
- all my coding tools work grand on this, and because its a Server OS, i can install a Full SQL Box directly on the machine, which has its advantages!
So, there you have it. all is going well after 6 weeks, give or take. if anyone has any questions, leave a comment!

Windows Server 2008 Move postponed, some theeding problems with Graffiti and Comments now working!
Its only postponed for a few days, but i have had to postpone the move of my workstation to Windows Server 2008, and the rest of my checks on the OS, till probably next week. the reason is because this blog is now hosted on the Mac Pro, which is the workstation i am upgrading.
As you may have noticed, the move to Graffiti has had some Theeding problems. Firslty, the whole post is not being displayed on the front page. Hopefully this is a simple fix... But, good news! Comments are now working again! Or at least they should be! Leave a comment and i can confirm they work! :)

Moving to Windows 2008 server as Workstation: Part 2: Photography
In part 1, I said I hoped most of my apps (expect for Media Sharing and Live Writer) would work in Windows Server 2008. Well, my next test is Photography software, and the big one for me is Photoshop LightRoom. And, well, it works! No problems. I haven't done much with it, other than load it up, but it installed and runs. You may be asking what about Photoshop its self? Currently downloading the trial and will get back to you on that one...
u[date] Photoshop CS3 and Adobe Bridge both seem to work correctly. Bridge complains at the start saying it requires XP with SP2 or above.. Other than that, its all working grand.

Moving to Windows 2008 server as Workstation: Part 1: Media
So, I have done some testing with a Virtualized Win2k8 Image and found out some interesting things. Firstly, you can install Windows Media Player on your Win2k8 server by selecting Desktop Experience in the Features section of the Server Manager. Problem is that Media sharing is not enabled, and by the looks of my searching online, not possible... Also, an interesting note: Windows Live writer will not install on a Server OS either... Now, everything else, in theory, should work just fine.
So, one idea to solve the problem is to Virtualize Windows Vista on the server. This means that when i need Vista, i just boot the image. I will also use it as a reason to test Hyper-V! :) More on this later. Backing up stuff now, might try it out in the morning!
[update] one important media tool for a lot of users would be iTunes. For this test i used the x64 edition of iTunes, and my Virtual Machine knew about my iPod touch (16Gb) connected via USB. iTunes worked without problem, and seen the iPod touch and allowed me to sync with it. So, 2k8 will sync an iPod. Also, to note, Sharing music over a network with iTunes works. I am currently having problems with both my AirPort Express (not configured correctly, dont know where the PowerBook is at the moment...) and my Apple TV (currently in for repairs). I will try configure the Airport Express tomorrow and try it out, and once the Apple TV comes back, I will see if that works...
[update 2] some issues have come out aroudn iTunes 8 and Hyper-V syncing with AppleTV. Read more here.
